Hold on to your hats, music fans! Could we be on the verge of a legendary reunion? Ronnie Wood, the guitar virtuoso best known for his iconic work with both Faces and the Rolling Stones, has dropped a major hint: new music with his old Faces bandmate, Sir Rod Stewart, is in the works! Wood, who will be celebrating an incredible 60 years in the music industry in 2025, isn't showing any signs of slowing down at 78.
While rumors of a full-blown Faces reunion have been circulating for some time, Wood's recent confirmation adds serious fuel to the fire. "We’ve got these songs that we’re working on from back in the day, but it’s hard to make our times tally," Wood revealed in an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. Juggling schedules for rock legends is no easy feat, after all!
But here's the exciting part: "When we do get a chance to get in the studio again, we will finish off these songs," he assured listeners. "We’ve got a good body of songs going." A "good body of songs"? That sounds incredibly promising for fans who've been craving new material from this dynamic duo.
But here's where it gets controversial... What exactly does "from back in the day" mean? Are we talking about unfinished tracks from the Faces' heyday, or something entirely new inspired by their shared history? This ambiguity is sure to spark speculation among die-hard fans.
So, how did Faces even come to be? The story is intertwined with rock history. Faces emerged in 1969 from the ashes of the English rock outfit Small Faces. When their frontman, Steve Marriott, departed to form the supergroup Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart, who had previously jammed together in the Jeff Beck Group, stepped in to fill the void.
For six glorious years, Faces were a dominant force on the UK and European charts. While they achieved considerable success, they only began to crack the US market shortly before their split in 1975. Just a year later, Wood officially joined the Rolling Stones, cementing his place as a rock icon.
Earlier this year, fans got a taste of the old magic when Stewart welcomed Wood onstage during his Glastonbury Festival set. Their performance of Faces' biggest hit, "Stay With Me," was nothing short of electrifying, proving that their onstage chemistry is as potent as ever. "Absolutely nothing had changed," Wood remarked. "It came over really well and he knows what he’s doing.” The enduring friendship and musical connection between Wood and Stewart are undeniable.
And this is the part most people miss: the potential for a full Faces reunion is even stronger than it appears!. In an April 2025 interview with Far Out Magazine, Faces drummer Kenney Jones confirmed that the band has recorded 11 songs for a potential new album. This would be their first studio album since 1973's Ooh La La!
"I can’t see it coming out this year," Jones cautioned. "But I can see it coming out next year. Everyone’s doing different things. We do little snippets [of recording] here and there. Then all of a sudden, The Stones are out [on tour] again, Rod’s out again…" So, while the logistics are challenging, the pieces are definitely in place for a Faces revival.
The big question remains: will this new music with Rod Stewart be a standalone project, or will it pave the way for a more extensive Faces reunion? Could these "songs from back in the day" be the foundation for that long-awaited album Jones mentioned?
